A ruby robe, and a rich nose of ripe fruits, with floral and cinnamon notes. Palate: with lovely structure, this is luscious, mineral juice, with plenty of freshness, and lively tannins! Ever evolving in the glass, this is unstable, volcanic stuff – a voyage in a glass!
Gabrio Bini
Gabrio Bini, 70 years young, lives and works on Pantelleria, a tiny volcanic island in the strait of Sicily, halfway between Sicily and Tunisia. The neighbour of Bond-girl-turned-winemaker Carole Bouquet, Bini has had several lives as well: architect in Milan, right-hand to a (very) big name in haute couture, before becoming consumed with a passion for this island – and for natural wines. Gabrio’s vines share his age, and the 4 hectares he works give him naturally low yields, with as little as 300 bottles made of certain cuvées – that’s an ultra-confidential wine indeed. The vines are farmed biodynamically, the vinifications are natural, without additives, and the wines are aged in large clay amphorae buried up to their necks, called dolia. A unique interpretation of a terroir, yielding wines that are equally unique. No question about it, Gabrio is an admirable torchbearer for natural wine!
