A clear juice with notes of blackcurrant, cranberry, tart strawberry, and a hint of violet... Palate: fluid, smooth, well balanced. A wine from Beaujolais? No, a wine from Japan!
Takahiko Soga
Takahiko Soga has emerged as a star of Japanese wine in just over a decade. This winemakers’ son, began his journey studying microbiology at the University of Tokyo but was unable to shake his passion for winemaking. He joined Coco Farm Winery, just north of Tokyo, where he spent a decade honing his skills, ultimately becoming cellar master. During this time, a pivotal meeting with Jura master Pierre Overnoy deeply inspired him, igniting a desire to craft wines of pure expression. Motivated by this encounter, Takahiko sought the ideal climate for viticulture, leading him to Hokkaido. In 2010, he established Takahiko Estate, now spanning 4.6 hectares in Yoichi. His meticulous approach reflects a distinctly Japanese ethos, blending precision and seasonal harmony in both vineyard and cellar. “I wish to be a winemaker who produces wine as quietly as possible, a craftsman with my own philosophy,” he muses. His aspiration is admirable... though his wines have nonetheless created quite the hubbub!
